Slipstream is as variable in quality as everything else. And then there is his earlier work, At Swim Two Birds, where the character in his novel, who happens to be writing a novel, has sex with one of his characters and produces a son – who is then prevailed upon to kill their author by the other characters because he hasn’t given them enough freedom. It does fit the pattern of Lethem’s slipstream work being disappointing though.

Should you be interested to streling more than one story or want to explore the possibilities of slipstream fiction further, this is to date the best choice for starting the journey. Offering a wealth of esteemed authors — from writers within the genre to those normally associated with mainstream fiction slipsream this volume aptly demonstrates that great science fiction appears in many guises. However it hadn’t been published when I wrote this guide.
